Last Bite



Last bite

I hold the last piece of bread with my fingers
I hesitate to put it in my mouth
I have dipped in cream and...
It is not the bread I am worried about
It is the memories that go with it.

'It is burned, '
He said pointing at the bread
I had chosen it, busy putting it in bag.
'I like the seeds on it, ' I replied.
I showed the mass of seeds on an area of the burned bread.
His index was still directed toward the burned parts.
His eyes rolled, 'It is waste.'
'It is mostly burned.'
He went on; I did not answer.

I know now
Last bite means:
'Out of sight, out of mind, '
Like billions who were born, died and...
