Kilkenny Near Adelaide Poem by Francis Duggan

Kilkenny Near Adelaide

Named after an Irish County where the hurling game is played
Kilkenny in South Australia just out of Adelaide
But no clashing of the hurling sticks or sliothar travelling
through the air
In fact in this Kilkenny one might not find a hurling player

Kilkenny where it's name came from, from here seems far away
And in this suburb of Adelaide the games they mostly play
Are Aussie rules football and cricket no hurling game played here
And names such as Bradman and Kerley amongst others they revere.

Their heroes are from Adelaide and their legends are home grown
And Kilkenny hurling greats such as Ollie Walsh and Skehan in this suburb unknown
And when I asked one have you heard of the great hurler Eddy
Keher?
He shook his head saying I never did nor neither do I care.

Kilkenny near Adelaide and where it's name came from are linked only by name
Their cultural differences so diverse no common ground they claim
For Kilkenny in South Australia has a culture of it's own
It's literary greats and artists and sporting heroes are home grown.
