Kaziranga Poem by Pranav Borah

Kaziranga

Once upon a time, I walked free
Bereft of fear of my destiny
Valiantly, I once roamed the land
Strutted and danced, hand in hand

Couldn’t decipher the human ploy
Killing us, you seek divine joy
Why you hurt me, I cried
Was I not once your pride?

Bullets showered from the gun
You hunted us one by one
All this for the greed of my horn
I wonder why I was ever born

The dismal sound fills the sky
Under the azure sky, silently I cry
Day and night, I cheat death
The weary body now has resigned to its fate

I want to live, give me no pain
I want to walk free once again
Valiantly I want to roam my land
Strut and dance, once again hand in hand

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Kaziranga - A national park and a world heritage site in the state of Assam. The park hosts two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceroses. Everyday the rhino, the pride of my state, is being hunted and killed by poachers for their horn. This is a rhino's tale, they want to live and be free, just like we do. The best we can do is spread their message.
