"Just Like You" Poem by Alicia Gail Lightsey

"Just Like You"

Father, give me the strength I need to make it through the day
Help me to keep my mind focused on the narrow way
There are times when I feel empty and incomplete
It's times like these I pray that you would root and ground my feet
My spirit calls you Father, my heart knows no greater love
My mind is always on you, you are all I'm thinking of
If I could have one wish and I know wishes do come true
It would be to spend my lifetime on earth as a disciple serving you
I would imitate the way you taught, my light would shine so bright
I would restrain myself from darkness, like you I would be the light
I would become as a little child again, I would gladly seek your face
I would reclaim my birthright and rise above this world in grace
I would search the realm of my imagination where my spirit wonders free
I would look within my soul for the inheritance you promised me
I would wear a crown upon my head, I would be a spiritual queen
Wisdom and Faith would guide me into the kingdom of things unseen
I would tell the world about you, I would spread the news far and wide
I would tell them that you live in the world they hold inside
My body is only flesh and blood, imperfect and born to sin
You know my heart and soul and all the thoughts I hold within
So Father, here I am again with arms outstretched to you
Repenting and begging forgiveness for the sins I sometimes do
Let no man judge me for the wrong I've done
For there is none perfect in the land beneath the sun
Father, if I could have one wish come true
I would be perfect Just Like You
But I am only human, please forgive me for the wrong I do
