Julia Poem Poem by David McLansky

Julia Poem

This year I knew no Spring
Having fallen in love in mid-Winter
And before the January thaw
My heart was broken

This year
I stumbled from
The cold brittle air
Of love in Winter ecstasy
Into
The sullen numbness of Summer
With you gone
And all my first green dreams
Dead in barren ground

And oh
How I can't bear
Seeing the over-ripe fruit
Of other peoples lives
As they laugh and lean against
One another
In the sweating Summer street
