John Shaw Neilson He Wrote Of Poem by Francis Duggan

John Shaw Neilson He Wrote Of

John Shaw Neilson he wrote of the country out there
Of the paddocks around Nhill often looking brown and bare
A countryside he loved that inspired him to poetry
To become the great poet of the Wimmera Mallee.

The beauty around him that he only see
For what was beautiful to him may not be so to me
For I am a non poet and 'twould seem fair to say
That compared to poets non poets look at things in a different way.

I have often wondered how Neilson a poet I have admired
Of the Wimmera Mallee's rugged countryside could feel so inspired
To write such marvellous poetry even in death his legend has grown
One can mention him as in a class of his own.

The beauty he did see in Nature he did celebrate
And in a rugged landscape great poems he did create
And that a poet can see beauty in a rugged land
Is something that a non poet like me could never understand.
