It Is Not Poem by Jade Darrow

It Is Not

We hear the words 'It'll be okay' to keep us from the truth.
'Everything will be fine' also keeps us from the truth.
Why keep it from us?
We're not young anymore.
You don't have to put up a fuss over us!
We're not four.
We don't want to hear the silly words 'it'll be okay', 'everything will be fine'.
It is not fine, we're not fine.

We don't want to hear that we're just fine when we know we're not.
How can we be with the world we live in?
We do nothing and yet we hear on the news that someone got shot.
That it was some old has been.
This world is not okay!
We are not okay!
We turn to music, to art, to books to keep us sane.
But how can we stay sane?

We grow up in a world full of violence, whether you like it or not.
We're stuck here, whether we like it or not.
