Iraq Once A Beautiful Country Poem by Francis Duggan

Iraq Once A Beautiful Country

Sad to say without Saddam Hussein a far more dangerous Iraq
One could now not walk any street there without fear of a deadly attack
Despite what Bush and his cronies those who deposed the dictator say
Iraq without their former despot a more dangerous place today.

Some seem to think that peace, democracy and liberty can be brought about by bombs and guns
And parents left to grieve for their children for their murdered daughters and sons
For invading other people's Countries there never is anything to gain
And decades after the invasion only grief, hatred and suffering remain

For those who once destroyed their Country their hatred will linger for years
Iraq once a beautiful Country is now Land of sorrow and tears
'Tis said that the history of war is written by the winners but for victory a huge price in blood is paid
And patriotism by them is reignited in every military parade.

So many beautiful old buildings and so much architecture by bombing in Iraq are destroyed
And far too many are maimed and injured and far too many people have died
Those who ordered the invasion will retire on big pensions for themselves they have done okay
And Iraq once a beautiful Country is a war torn Nation today.
