Innocence Lost Poem by Janine Louw

Innocence Lost

Innocence Lost
at what a cost
never the same
then came the blame.

Look at herself
lost all of her wealth
dignity, innocence, power and peace
secrets to hide
broken inside.

Innocence lost
at what a cost
dignity, innocence, power and peace
all at once left
soul feels bereft
dignity, innocence, power and peace
oh what a loss
and what a cost.

Eyes have gone dead
sadness instead
and sometimes in anger they flash.

Small smile she wears
but she is not there
locked in a room
where she too early had bloomed
and simultaneously died
before she cried
about the innocence she had lost.

Never dreamed it would be like this
supposed to be just pure bliss
emptiness feel
like fists of steel
clenching her heart
this was not smart.

Can never return
that bridge has been burned
and high is the cost
when innocence is lost.
