In The Summer Garden Of The Beast Poem by Tsunami HiroshiSu

In The Summer Garden Of The Beast

A wealthy merchant had three daughters
All surpassingly beautiful
But the youngest was so fair
And so kind
That everyone simply called her Beauty

One fine day, the merchant left
To receive one of his ships
He asked each of his daughters what they would like
For he wanted to get them each a gift

The oldest daughter said gowns of silk and velvet
The next daughter asked for gold and jewels
But Beauty simply wished to have a rose

When the merchant reached the port he found
His ships
Destroyed
His wealth
Gone

And he journeyed home
A broken man
A storm followed him and he lost his way
He fell through the woods to find himself
In a garden of summer
With a beautiful palace at the center

The merchant ventured forth to see the beautiful gardens
He came upon a rose bush
And he knew he would never be able to get gowns and jewels
For his daughters
But he could pick one rose for Beauty

As the stem snapped a howl of anger resounded in the garden
And a monstrous Beast appeared from behind a tree
He was angry at the merchant for cutting the rose
For once cut it could never grow again
The merchant explained that he just wanted something to give to his youngest daughter
The Beast considered this and decided
That if Beauty were to come live at the palace
There would be no consequence to the merchant for picking the rose
The Beast also offered a trunk of gold that would restore the merchant's house
The merchant went home with a heavy heart
He gave the rose to Beauty and told her what had happened
She promised her father she didn't mind
And returned to the palace in his stead

There she was waited on by a host of charming animals
And every night she dined with the Beast
Every night she learned more about him
And found he was really kind and good
Every night before they departed for bed
He asked her the same question:
'Beauty, will you marry me? '
Every night she responded
'Pray, do not ask me this.'

Each time this question was asked Beauty found it harder to say no
She was growing fonder of the Beast
And she was quite happy at the palace

One night she could no longer refuse
She agreed on the condition that she could go home for a last visit to her family
The Beast gave her a ring and told her to spin it on her finger three times
And say 'I would like to return to the Beast.'
When she was ready to come back to him

And so she went home
Her father and sisters were overjoyed
And they brought her to parties and dinners
With all their friends
And Beauty forgot her promise to return to the Beast

One night she had a dream that she was back in his garden
But everything was dead
And there by the rose bush
The Beast lay dying

Beauty awoke with a start and spun the ring quickly
Thrice upon her finger
She said the magic words and she found herself in the summer garden
The flowers were indeed dead
She fell upon the Beast
And her tears cascaded upon his chest

She implored him to stay
To be with her forever
But to no avail
He closed his eyes and died
'No! ' she howled
Sobbing harder than ever
'I love you.'
She whispered
And he rose into the air
His boorish head changed into that of a handsome prince
His paws became hands and feet
And he was revived

The flowers came back to life
Before their very eyes
And the animal attendants changed back into humans

Beauty and the Beast were married
And lived forever
In happiness
