In The Name Of God Poem by Dave Dafes

In The Name Of God

In the name of God
Bath we our beaches with blood.
Homes obliterated, temples shelled.
Our cities turned to a pile of rubble.
Chaos in the street, filled with casualties
Properties destroyed.
Helter skelter runs ev'ryone,
Searching for safety.

In the name of God
Felt I the dagger of my brother
Plunged deep within my breast,
Maim us another, Littered our lawns
With the bones of little children.
Slaughtered in our fanaticus,
To a God I know not.
People mourning their love ones slain.
Afraid to venture forth to worship.

Thus says the Lord,
When He hasn't spoken.
Is God powerless?
That He requires your sword?
Is He thirsty for blood?
That we offer each other as lambs?
Does He compel us to wedge war in his name?
Is He an author of violence?
Yet in His name did we murder,
Ripping each other apart to satisfy our bloodlust
Justifying our atrocities and evil cause by His name

O youth! be not a fool?
Be not a tool in the hands of radicals
Whose children they send abroad for a better life.
Why allow yourself to be persuaded,
To see your brother as your enemy?
See it not you're being manipulate?
See it not you're being misled?
Say no to them, say no to violence
They are the real enemy not I.
Do not be numbered among their camp.
Flee from their gathering.

O my fatherland!
Why does religion
Cause you to kill your children?
Is the Lord God not one?
In whose image we're all created?
What is the difference between you and I?
Do we not pray to the same God?
Though we invoke Him by different names?
Yet we live, ravaged by the fury of hate
Fueled by political dissidence
To destabilize our democracy.

Let us cease and ponder,
What God will compel us to murder in His name?
Let us reason,
What religion will make us do evil?
Did He not say in the scriptures 'do not kill? '
Will He then ask that of us?
For the Lord is a peaceful God
Who said 'blessed are the peacemakers
For the sons of God they shall be called'
Take heed my friend,
Any doctrine apart from this is evil
And cannot be of the Lord.
So stop, stop the killings in God's Name.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Dedicated to all the victim of religious
Crisis in Nigeria.
In my country, there is religious intolerance
especially in the Northern part of Nigeria.
We kill each other and destroy properties
'In The Name Of God' Each Sunday,
a church is bombed by suicide bomber
who belong to an Islamic religious sect.
It has always being like this for decade but
Recently, it became a weekly occurrence.
Christians are being slaughtered, all in the
name of religion. So as my own little contribution
to peace, I was compelled to write this poem after
three Churches were bombed on Sunday 17th June 2012.
The casualties were much and my heart bleed for my dear Country.
