IN MEMORY*

Not often have I found the time
To talk of things we shared,
Nor often have I looked behind
Or told you how I cared.
Now the endless days stretch by
When time I have a-plenty,
And never will I let you die
As long as breath be in me.
For all the days that I may live
Gently will I mention
Your name and, though I may not give
A sign of my intention,
Forever will I keep alive,
To everyone who’s known you,
Your memory – it shall survive
Though time may have out-grown you.

*Dedicated to Herb

Once a child,
Then full grown –
Herself the mother
Of a newer home.
Years are unkind –
Her heart has cried
When left behind
When loved ones died.
Now her turn
Has come to rest,
And though we know
That it is best,
Still we sigh
And shed a tear
For an empty spot
Has been left here.

*Dedicated to Leota
Written for Anne,1983, in commemoration
of her husband and her mother.
