Immortal Longings By Karlheinz Stockhausen

Rating: 5.0

I have been a faithful Christian
I have prayed to some Buddhas
I have prostrated inwardly to Allah
I have feared images of Aztec and Mayan Gods
I have allowed most of the Gods of the Earth to visit me

In all of them YOU have met me, divided and diversified, meshed,
YOU GOD, YOU who are all Gods and much more,
The Whole, the One, the Individable, including me.
Now I search everywhere for you - The Individable, that was divided,
now WHOLE.

Companion, you met HIM in me.
You will learn to hear when HE speaks and acts through me.
Do not give up hope, I have been given a lot more time.
I still know who I am - HIS MOUTH, HIS HAND.
I am on the way, and within myself I am completely confident.
I will not give up and I will not be given up.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The visionary composer, Karlheinz Stockhausen, wrote this assessment
of his spiritual growth and his future spiritual goals in 1968 when he was forty years old. I was 21 that year and I wish I had had a copy of it then, because it would have smoothed my path to the present. Stockhausen followed its philosophy and lived by its beliefs for the subsequent forty years of musical creativity and spiritual development. His last great project was a series of seven operas under the all-embracing title LICHT. I echoed this commitment to SPIRITUAL LIGHT in the title in a poem I wrote about the impact of his music on me, body and soul: SPREADING LIGHT THROUGH SOUND.
This is his vision: it is universal, peaceful, suffused with beauty,
infused with truth, and motivated by goodness. Such is Stockhausen's legacy, and those of us who love the man and his music are committed to advancing that legacy. Death has enlarged his soul, it is part of the World Soul, and it beckons us to ascend to the same apotheosis.

God is ONE and God is MANY.This view we also find in Hindu philosophy. God is one - -we call Him in different names and may reach Him through 'Truth' and kindness. Let me quote from this fine poem of spiritual enlightenment- - - - - - I have been a faithful Christian I have prayed to some Buddhas I have prostrated inwardly to Allah I have feared images of Aztec and Mayan Gods I have allowed most of the Gods of the Earth to visit me In all of them YOU have met me, divided and diversified, meshed, YOU GOD, YOU who are all Gods and much more, The Whole, the One, the Individable, including me. I have been a faithful Christian I have prayed to some Buddhas The author was very confused. Do you not see that these lines are a contradiction?

Well, of course, they are. And that's the inevitable result of all these religions which each claim to be the one and only truth. After six thousands years of such stubborn isolation of beliefs and denigration of other beliefs it is time for humanity to declare a multi-faith perspective by finding the common ground upon which ALL religions rest. In fact various PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHIES and ecumenical meetings have attempted to bridge this divide. One ecumenical gathering met in Assisi to evoke the spirit of Saint Francis and his universal love, The Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn write a comparative study of the two world redeemers, Buddha and Jesus. And the Muslim Seyyed Nasr Hossein has promoted ecology and caring for the earth as a mission that all religions derived from Abraham's revelation can agree on. We have to get beyond the contradictions which have divided us and led to bloodshed. No verbal statement of belief requires hostility, prejudice and killing of our fellow human beings. The meaning of the word G-O-D and the proper relationship of humanity to that numinous reality transcends the ability of ALL PEOPLE AND THEIR PARTICULAR RELIGIONS. In Stockhausen's opera SUNDAY FROM LIGHT the Chorus is divided and sings hymns from many religions simultaneously. He can do this because as a musician he can HARMONIZE differences into a higher unity. That should be our paradigm - HARMONY. And furthermore, why is praying to both Jesus and Buddha a contradiction? Prayer is a posture of humility and an expression of need for help. If you only believe ONE RELIGION is true, you art still left with thousands of other religions which at very least attest to human creativity. So celebrate that diversity and show respect for even the smallest human effort to comprehend the universe.
