If He Were Here Poem by Lora Colon

If He Were Here

Rating: 5.0

Tomorrow I'll wear his favorite dress
With flowers of indigo blue,
Because I know that if he were here
That is what he would ask me to do

I'll sit beside the river and weep
With the willow and the mourning dove,
Knowing so well that if he were here
I would not be crying for his love

The night comes now only to torture
This heart, each time renewing my dread,
Because I know that if he were here
On my breast he'd come to lay his head

And all through the night I would love him
With a passion he never outgrew,
Because I know that if he were here
That is what we both would want to do

If he were here in my arms again
This pain and loneliness would depart,
But time is cruel and will not remove
This chain of thorns wrapped around my heart

And should a new love knock at my door
My response will be 'Please, go away! '
Because I know that if he were here
Those are the words he'd want me to say

Wow, a lost love so beautifully, and sadly, described. Adding to my fav poems list.

you/’the speaker’ seem fixated with/by a phantom lover. how could it be that a phantom seems to stand in ‘your’ way of answering the door when a “new love” knocks? it seems a bit surreal, but I guess some people are like that. [I’ll have you know that I don’t know when I last used the words “fixated” and “surreal”. ages ago, if ever! ] I love “weep” with “willow and the mourning dove”. ………… ‘weeping willow’ I presume! the rhyming redeemed (somewhat) the negativity of the topic. The 2nd and 3rd stanzas bother me a bit, as it seems to me each of the first two lines do not really (for me) lead into (realistically) each of the last two lines. but I can understand that your loneliness may affect how you think! :) or : ( ? On the other hand, I really enjoyed the last two stanzas. they seem to drive home the hopelessness of the unfortunate life situation. to MyPoemList and I’ll throw this one into my/our July showcase of poems/poets on my PH site. sleep well, my dear. bri ;)
