If Ever The Perfect Line Poem by Martha J. Eshelman

If Ever The Perfect Line

came before the need,
was tossed in the garbage bin
to rot with apple peels and empty bottles
of aloe vera sun screen,
would be bag lady
with her green Frederick and Nelson's bag
lined with her beige Norstroms' bag,
in her Woolworth dumpster earrings
and khaki coats,
recognize the jewel
as a jewel for which
no setting has been bent and hammered
and hawk the line
on the corner of First and Pike?
