If Damnation Awaits Me Poem by Francis Duggan

If Damnation Awaits Me

If damnation awaits me well that suits me fine
Try to save your own soul sir you cannot save mine
I do not believe in an afterlife or of a heaven or hell
I am just one of those blokes who pens doggerel
I do not have a religion does that mean I am bad
But for my lack of faith for myself I can't feel sad
I do not believe in a God of that why should I lie
I only believe we are born to die
I do believe that my soul will die with me
Though most people tell me how wrong I must be
It is only my ego that makes me fear death
And for life I will struggle till my very last breath
I would like for to live for as long as I can
And die without pain as a very old man.
