If Poem by Denn Meneses

If

If words were wishes and letters were spaces
That one can summon to fill the empty places
Clogging the soul and numbing the senses;
They would be like a raging torrent
Flowing frenziedly in the heat of the moment
Romancing the earth in blissful denouement.

If songs were dreams and poems were schemes
That one can conjure to quench the thirst for hymns
Parching the heart and sapping the limbs;
They would be like some magic wand
Casting spells with the wave of a hand
Draping specks of stardust mem’ries on barren land.

If there is no meaning to rhyme
And pictures fade with the wind in time;
If there is no reason to a change in seasons
And love disappears when the cold breeze beckons.
If there is no more madness to laughter
And triumph turns into the worst of disasters;
Faces will sink back to oblivion
Bodies will perish in hope’s contagion
And shadows will fall ‘neath the flickering cauldron.

But if words can ignite a flame
And make cowards writhe in shame;
If they were made for believing
And melting stones with loosened chains;
If words can truly inspire
And stoke the fires of desire;
If they can keep the torches burning
And ease the doubts that seethe within;
If words are a gift for the ages
Or a pit where true riches lie;
It is the only treasure worth bequeathing
A legacy that will never die.

And when all is here and gone
Who’s not to say –
Well done, Master, well done!
