Ian Mcewan Poem by gershon hepner

Ian Mcewan

It seems to me Ian McEwan
though goyish, invited a Jew in,
becoming a holy day tripper
in “Atonement, ” which Jews call Yom Kippur.

Inspired by a clerihews on Socrates, Mallarmé, Valéry and Goethe by W. H. Auden, suggesting to Linda that I write a series myself. Auden’s clerihew on Socrates goes thus:

When Xanthippe
wasn’t feeling too chippy
she’d bawl at Socrates:
“Why aren’t you Hippocrates? ”
