I Wish To Be Poem by Lonnie Hicks

I Wish To Be

Rating: 2.8

'I wish to be, ' is what was said
a sound silently, stealthily inhabiting our night
eyes melting on the pillow
in the slush snow
which were her tears.

'You love me true, ' she said
'but if I love you back
I lose my soul.
No fault of yours
you are your dream
but with you I can't be mine
this is sometimes the way of life, ' she said.

'I wish to be
and our trajectories
just don't match;
your life is so large
there is no oxygen left for mine
and in the suffocating shadows
I try to make my stance
only to slowly wither;
so now I have to get out
while I still have the chance.

And I said to my self
silently knowing she would never understand
that in leaving thus
she did not perceive
that she was the sail which launched my ship
and the winds breath
which propelled us
but sadly
this was something
she could not see,
nor believe
because she was so obsessed
with not believing in her self.
