I Prefer Gumdrops To Shoe-Drops Poem by Holly Jamestone

I Prefer Gumdrops To Shoe-Drops

You’re just a little too rough around the edges for my taste
And your skin feels as rough to me as mine appears soft
With your eye-popping rage emerging at the most unexpected times
And my foot catawampus in my mouth if I forget to buckle up in preparation
For the unpredictable explosion when the other shoe drops

The tea kettle on my gas range is forever silent
And I will never subject myself to the uneasiness involved
Been there, done that, not where I’m at

You’re just a little too tattered and mad and sad and full of rage
And your eyes feel as dark to me as mine appear light
With your vengeful cursing at the most unwelcome times
And my foot in my ear because I sought the silver lining and forgot that
Being with you means always waiting for the other shoe to drop

The tea kettle on my gas range is forever silent
And I will never subject myself to a slow simmer before the boilover
Been there, done that, not where I’m at
