I'M A Person Poem by Roberto Ottoboni

I'M A Person

Dost thou think that I am strange
And frightening, like a monster from the deep
That disturbeth thee in thy sleep
And looketh like a dog with mange?
Dost thou think that my spiky hair
Will pierce thy heart and make thee scared?
Dost thou think that my pierced lip
Will bite thee with a steely grip?
Dost thou think that my tattooed arm
Will punch out at thee and do thee harm?

Ah no! Dost thou judge ev'ry book by its cover?
Inside my soul, I am a tender lover.
Inside my soul, my heart it sings
Of love and other beautiful things.
I weep inside when thou dost scorn me
Sometimes I wish my mother had never born me!
Even if to me thou canst not relate
Do not treat me with scorn and hate.
I AM A PERSON, just like thee.
Look into my heart and see!
