I Have Gotten Off Easy Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Have Gotten Off Easy

I HAVE GOTTEN OFF EASY

I have gotten off easy
I didn't see War close-up
I didn't have my head blown off
I didn't see my friends blown apart
I didn't have to kill anyone

I got off easy
Others did the hard stuff
They fought the wars
I remained behind the lines
I wasn't one of the real defenders

I got off easy
I haven't known the hardest things in life

The war goes on
But I still am not in the front line
I pray for our soldiers
May God protect them
And heal the injured
And console if this is in any way possible
The families of those who have been lost.
