I Have A Dream

Rating: 3.5

I want to write real poetry
But I’m not sure how I should start
I need someone who can teach me
the basics of poetic art.

I do not know if it should rhyme
and meter is a mystery.
I have the will I have the time.
I somebody will please help me.

I have the urge I have to write
I really want to get it right
What makes it poetry or prose?
there is a difference I suppose.

I know there’s different schools of thought
an ongoing controversy.
I’m simply looking for support
to help me with my poetry.

I have the basic writing tools
a pad a pencil and P.C.
I need to learn the basic rules
which turn prose into poetry.

I am willing to study hard
and heed advice that’s offered me.
By any older wiser bard
who’s skilled at writing poetry.

As you know Ivor the needs expressed by this voice are very much my own. What I have been surprised by my entrance into poetry is the new issues it is making me think about: the role of being a good story teller as against word control, the role of finding a new viewpoint or abstraction on life, the role of personal integrity - not just putting the stuff out when you have not searched deep within for quality. With thanks for your own advice given to me. philip

Meter is a mystery, eh? But you master it perfectly well, :) Great poem, Ivor. Poetry is difficult to define. You can read a lot of literary critics and it will still be hard to define. There are some rules you can follow to write, and following them usually means you're writing poetry. But I don't think you need meter, for instance, to have a poem (though I really like meter and use it, lol) . Poetry is what you make it. And in my opinion real poetry is anything you put your heart in. You're doing a wonderful job, Ivor. I don't think you need any help, :)

I think they are few and far between Ivor. Are there basic rules, who knows, poetry is an expression of each person, in their special way, and every poem is different, and variety is the spice of life. You're doing pretty well as it is, just keep writing, we'll keep reading that's for sure. Loved this one, by the way. Love and hugs Ernestine XXX
