I Do Not Know Poem by Elia Michael

I Do Not Know

I do not know what fate it is to be,
Nor do I know what day or hour will see
The end of life, by that I mean my life.
Though this speculation of mine is rife,
I do not know; I must await the day
And I do hope and fervently do pray
That it will be a sudden painless death
And that my very last expiring breath
Will be a holy sigh of thanks to Him;
A faint respiratory kind of hymn.
But if it is decided that my fate
Should be extended pain, then I would hate
To live, if live be the right word, so I
Would give consent, for you to let me die.
