I Did Not Tell My Bar Room Mates Poem by Francis Duggan

I Did Not Tell My Bar Room Mates

I did not tell my bar room mates that I saw on the trees
Small fairy people dancing in the sunshine and the breeze
If I told them they would shake their heads and to each other say
The poor bloke cannot handle his grog he has drunk too much today.

I did not tell my bar room mates that across my bedroom floor
A spider as big as a large dog crawled through the open door
If I told them they would only say he has lost all reality
He is as mad as a hatter or so he seems to be.

I did not tell my bar room mates that a strange bloke three metres tall
Glared at me with the wildest eyes from the lounge room wall
They would only laugh when I'd have left and say he is not feeling well
And perhaps that is the price he pay for penning doggerel.

I did not tell my bar room mates that on my way home from the pub last night
That across the moonlit and starry sky I saw the strangest light
They would only say he does seem mad and he has not been well of late
But he is really not our friend more of a drinking mate.

I never tell my bar room mates of the strange things that I see
Like a spider as large as a large dog or fairies dancing on a tree
Or a giant staring from the lounge room wall or a strange light in the sky
They would only say he is not feeling well and pity the poor guy.
