I Am At Peace Poem by Richard Noggin

I Am At Peace

The nurse is concerned about
My well being
If I am sick
Do I feel any pain
I am fine
Content
At peace with myself and
My demise
But I worry if he is ready
He has barely had time to adjust to my illness
To face the fact that I am terminal
That he must live life soon without me
Are you ready my love
I grow weaker everyday
I can no longer stand
And today I lost control of my bowels
I caught a glance of your horror
Although you hid it well
With your “I love you” and “It’s ok you couldn’t help it”
But I am at peace with myself and my demise
Are you ready for me to leave my love
Today I am unable to move my body
I lay limp
Unable to speak
The nurse returns to examine me
I can hear your tears as
He explains my time is near
But don’t worry
I am at peace with myself and my demise
But are you ready
I struggle through the night
Your words of love
Your promise that all will be ok
Your gentle touch
The smell of your aftershave
All bring me peace
I long to comfort you one last time
I long to comfort your pain
To hold you through the night
But I can’t
It is getting harder to hang onto life
I struggle for consciousness
And pray that you can find the resolve to accept my loss
I am going to be alright
I am at peace with myself and my demise
But are you ready
This morning I fell warm
As bright light bathes over my body
I hear your voice
For the first time without fear, without pain
You seem calm
At peace with yourself and with my demise
I am alright, at peace and waiting for you
In the ever after.
