I... Poem by Aniruddh Mukerji

I...

I am but not a man of thought,
not given to what
I lost or got.
I am not bothered that they forgot,
that when the air was rent,
and with danger fraught.
they remembered me and my lot.
And no it doesn’t bother me,
I am not overwrought,
that they remember me
only when courage is sought.
But when all is well,
and with conflicts quelled
I am well…,
just laid to rot.
Yet I am not…by rage begot.
I could have retorted…but I have not.
For if they be at peace … I let them be,
as long as they’re pleased
never mind me…
Capricious, as they may choose to be,
I don’t have that liberty.
And I will suffer as I have suffered
silent, ready and patiently…
I will stand as I have stood,
I can’t do everything but anything I would,
If only they could’ve understood…
But never mind if they can not
And I won’t call it treason,
as many would reason
for given to treachery I am not.
For I am but not a man of thought…
