Hypocrisy At Its Finest Poem by Mike Smith

Hypocrisy At Its Finest

Rating: 5.0

I know people
Well educated and esteemed
Who are so staunchly anti-racist
Anti-theist
Anti-discrimination
That the hate they have for the groups of bigots of the world
Is equal to
Or perhaps greater than
The the hate those bigots pass on to those they oppress
Racism
Religion
Discrimination
They are tools of evil yes
But they are not the enemy
And neither are the people who employ them
The enemy is the hate itself
Not the tools used for its distribution

If you hate someone for being a bigot
Doesn't that just make a bigot out of you?
And if so
Are you then forced to hate yourself?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I've tried explaining this to one of the people who inspired the poem.... Have you ever tried reasoning with a brick wall? The results are underwhelming

i tend to agree with Dan Reynolds' comment. hate/bigotry/racism/intolerance, whatever you call it, may be in many people's minds....and that is unfortunate. for whatever reason, the fact is that some people have 'those feelings'. But, let's think of a light switch, shall we? behind the light switch, when it is turned off, there is electricity...somewhere i guess. ha ha. but until a finger (call the finger a tool) flips the switch to on, the electricity has not effect on the bulb or appliance. ok? likewise, it is not [in one way of thinking] the 'hate' etc. which causes wars, beatings, nasty epithets ['epithets' as in 'terms of abuse'], et al. it is not the hate, racism, greed, etc. it IS THE HATERS, THE RACISTS, THE GREEDY PEOPLE...when they ACT on their beliefs/thoughts. bri :) a worthy poem. p.s. so the 'tools' need not be hated [i don't hate the people who act or don't; sometimes NOT acting can also cause misery for others]. but if they are hated, again i say the people acting on the hate cause woes, not the hate in itself. hmm?

I am an atheist, but until I was 15 I went to Sunday School and Bible Class and have a reasonably good grounding in the Bible, its teachings regarding morality, the way we treat each other etc. I regard the Bible as a reasonable set of rules by which to lead my life. The folk who really hack me off, and several of my friends fall into this category, are the folk who go to church regularly but are the biggest bunch of racists you could imagine.

Yes, for all the talk of accepting everyone and all being equal, oftentimes the people shouting these messages loudest are one who have the most animosity for certain groups. If you despise bigotry so greatly that you see a bigot as a lesser being, than you are every bit as discriminatory as any racist, sexist, or religious extremist. Bottom line: you can't fight hate with hate

And the 'brick wall' probably didn't even know you were talking about him!

Precisely. Or almost, SHE couldn't see through her angered veil

You are correct, the act is to be despised, not the actor. What is needed is education. Many bigots are ignorant of the facts.

The assumption that they hate the bigots, etc, is possibly the point for debate. I think most people who identify and make known their dislike and intolerance of these traits, are not necessarily haters, but are aware that we as humanitarians, rather than the many sub-divisions of racial and religious pigeon-holes we fall or are pushed into, have a duty to identify injustice and protest and educate, to reduce or negate.
