Humble Lamb Poem by Joyce Hemsley

Humble Lamb

Holy lamb of the meadow
what is your quest
as you lie 'neath the trees
taking your rest?
Grazing on the hillside
living for today...
oh humble 'Lamb of God'
please, never stray.
You tell of warm summers
and remind us of May
dull is the valley, barren and bare;
no happiness, just sadness
when you are not there.

On my wall I have a traditional Polish glass painting. It is painted from behind with the foreground first and the background in the last layers. It depicts the chepherd carrying on his shoulders the lamb that went astray. Why is that lamb so important for the chepherd? Is it because he/she by going astray 'outside the box' of the herd showed properties that was important to some greater plan.
