Howard's Battlers Poem by Francis Duggan

Howard's Battlers

Who are these 'Howard Battlers' of them so much we hear
Perhaps middle class Sydney Suburbanites wee Johnny they revere
And not blue collar workers since Howard himself to them does not endear
And their voting intentions have always been so clear.

I always thought a Battler was an embattled soul
A person surviving on low income or scraping by on dole
Those living in million dollar homes are not battlers to me
What would they know of hardship or want or poverty.

These so called Howard Battlers not living on welfare
And a Battler a term one should not use to describe a millionaire
Amongst those who support the Liberal and National parties you won't find many poor
They work in well paid jobs and they know affluence and their futures are secure.

A Battler is hardly one well of financially
Unlike these so called Howard Battlers we hear of on the A.B.C.
And each time I hear of a Howard Battler to myself I only say
The weekly mortgage of a good home in Sydney a battler could not pay.
