How I Walked These Streets Poem by Shalom Freedman

How I Walked These Streets

How I walked these streets
In the years of my loneliness
How I felt then
The desolation of the coming night
The grey and the cold
The distances and hidden corners
Where no one knew my face-

How I walked these streets
All those years alone
And how I have forgotten
And how in this one night of memory back here
I feel again
How lonely how far
How distant all the world is
When one is only one lonely person
Walking alone
Toward the night.
