How Poem by Amanda Deupree

How

We're just friends
That's what we say
But we're both liars
In every way

We don't kiss
And we don't touch
But we both know
We love too much

We're both smart
So we both know
This is death
If ever we show

She loves you
And he loves me
But when we're together
It's easy to see

Years ago we had our chance
We were scared and so we ran
Now we know what we lost
And we live the best we can

How do I love you
How do you love me
When committed to others
Is our destiny

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I was talking to one of my closest friends of the opposite sex and we joked that we should have married each other. We never dated, but everyone always thought that we did because we would make 'the perfect couple'. This poem came to my while I was thinking about what would happen if we had fallen in love.
