House Of Vanity Poem by Elena Plotkin

House Of Vanity

Rating: 5.0

I am a well-renowned appraiser of property and artifacts.
And happily my eyesight has not succumbed to cataracts.
Over the years I have had the privilege to evaluate,
items that people and governments see fit to arrogate.
The rarest and most precious gems, metals, and antiquities,
are squirreled away by rich and power-hungry philistines.
The most important and significant pieces of history and culture,
are being purloined and leveraged by career driven vultures.
But no need to worry for the house of vanity is built on sand,
and God and humanity this too shall withstand.

I really like your closing image which ties the whole poem together. It makes the clear and present danger caused by various self-deceptions so apparent, so exposed that there is no stage left from which to deceive people. You have a gift for rhyme which is one of the oldest poetic techniques but one I simply have no patience to master. Yet A. E. Stallings who writes all of her poems in rhyme calls rhyme THE HONEY OF OUR LANGUAGE.

a new word for me, though i've heard of the practice: arrogate: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - arrogate play verb ar·ro·gate \-ˌgātPopularity: Bottom 50% of words Simple Definition of arrogate : to take or claim (something, such as a right or a privilege) in a way that is not fair or legal - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - interesting to see it implied that something may be arrogated legally though not fairly. WHO decides what is fair? ? ================================= purloined and leveraged ...............i had to look up both words. ok, stolen and leveraged [which has several definitions having to do with finance, and (in another sense) lifting things. and not lifting as in stealing]. ====================================== well, we have a bathroom vanity, but not a complete house of vanity, ............though i do have photos and paintings of ME on every wall! i would mix cement with the sand. bri :) i think this poem is too sophisticated for me.
