Home Alone Poem by Kela LewisMorin

Home Alone

Everything becomes so much more dark and sinister whenever you are alone.
You're constantly on guard and overcautious just to answer your mobile phone.
Any slight disturbance or eerie creak and you begin to panic.
Retreating back into your secure settee conjuring up the most dramatic
Scenarios that have virtually no possibility of ever occurring.
But that never seems to stop the cogs from continuously turning.
You fasten all the windows and arm yourself with kitchen based artillery.
And man your position surveying the living room as if you were a member of the military.
Increasing the volume on your television set to distract and block out the noises.
The local neighbors walk past your window but you class them as unfamiliar voices.
You can't help but be on edge until you have some sort of company.
But these common trains of thoughts are expected and customary.

I thought the same until I heard this one story about a girl called Anne.
She was in a similar situation; she was home alone because all of her plans
To go out had failed to happen. So she decided to stay in and do some revision.
Just a relaxing evening in with her books, her dog and a night of television.
Her father had called exclaiming to her that he would be in late because of a meeting.
And that there was some food in the oven just in case she has not already eaten.
She hears a rustle of bags down stairs but she didn't pay it any attention.
She then hears what sounded like a fist and some glass make a fatal connection.
She screams out after her dog telling him to come upstairs.
She hears a rush of footsteps and looks out but can see no one there.
She scratches her head and resumes studying her books.
She hears some more movement but she doesn't bother to take a look.
Her focus is distorted by the television and she becomes engrossed.
She closes her eyes because the horrific tense scenes are what she fears the most.
As she opens them a tall man dressed in black is suddenly standing at the door.
She withdraws back into her chair screaming and her eyes begin to pour.
The man looks at her and raises the bottom half of his mask to reveal a smile.
He then turns his back to her and exits the house in a cool, calm and collected style.
His hands holding several full bags of what she assumes to be her household items.
But all she can do is sit there quivering because she is to scared and frightened.
Although she came out the situation unharmed and completely intact.
It was the fact a person was able to do all of this and she wasn't able to fight back.
Also this whole situation could've ventured down a much more traumatic direction.
And the words 'What if' are all that she contemplates and mentions.

This world is unfair and too unpredictable.
It requires you to be distrusting and justifiably cynical.
These are the horrors that can happen to anyone on any given day.
All we can do is hope and pray that they will never come our way.
