Heat Poem by Shannon Thompson

Heat

I threw myself into your fire
I climbed your ladder to the sun
but it wasn't hot when i was done
your kisses burned
but the flames were dying
you didn't even feel like trying

i threw myself into your fire
the burns have left me scared
new skin can't make me whole again
i miss the heat on winter nights
i need time to let the embers cool
back to black and blue

i threw myself into your fire
but there weren't any ashes
because there wasn't anything left to burn
instead something was missing
smoke lines the space it occupied
sometimes i wish we tried....matches

they say if you die in a fire
you die because you can't breathe
but i can't breathe without you
