Harsh Drought Conditions Poem by Francis Duggan

Harsh Drought Conditions

This countryside could do with weeks of rain
The dams near empty and bone dry every drain
Yet the six day forecast is for warm and dry
And the sun burns brightly in the clear blue sky.

Some farmers at their own hands they have died
Financial ruin did lead them to suicide
The robbing drought on their mental state did tell
And life for them became far worse than hell.

Only mid Spring and the landscape looking brown
And the reservoir that supplies water to the town
In one hundred years has never been so low
And the near dry creek in a slow trickle flow.

Though for financial losses due to drought farmers cannot be paid
The Government helps them a little with financial aid
But hungry sheep and cattle getting thin
In drought conditions none can hope to win.

Today a high of 28 degrees
And there is a great thirst in the southern breeze
That of any moisture sucks the paddocks dry
And the sun is burning in the clear blue sky.
