Handful Of Dust Poem by Sankar Sarkar

Handful Of Dust

Rating: 4.7

Can anyone give me
a handful of dust of the soil?
To feel the cadence of the universe
To feel the existence of life
To feel ever inspiration
To go ahead of facing
the sophistication
From anywhere
From any place
From birth to grave
And from reality to eternity
I want only a handful of dust
of the soil!
To understand the democratic sensation
Ever flowing in my veins
In my thoughts
In my realization
Even in the blood,
irrespective of child, young
and the old
Have you felt your essence
In the speck of dust of this soil?
Have you ever seen your face
through the mirror of this soil?
How has it reflected your image
on the vastness of eternity?
How are you looking?
Beautiful nor ugly?
Introvert nor extrovert?
Democratic nor autocratic?
Friendly nor foe?
Don’t cast down your face
with shame!
Raise your head!
And open your eyes!
Greet the child
of your heart of the hearts!
Here is still time
Here is blue sky yet
Nature looks loving
Ocean looks wavy
Hills look optimistic
Come my brave hearts!
Brave lovers!
Brave comrades of inspiration

To catch hold of the sky
to scatter on the pale,
To sprout all unborn possibilities
To awaken drowsy feelings from trance
Only I want a handful of dust of this soil
To feel, to realize, to visualize the relation
Among the past, the present and the future
To paint the sketch the uncertainty
On the canvas of certainty of my heart
With varied and assorted colors of the dust
Of my soil, and the soil of universe
To feel ever joy with my leaden eyes in mortal
Rhythm of feeling of my soiled body
Reduced to dust!
Can anyone give me
a handful of this soil?

In THE WASTELAND T.S.Eliot wrote, I WILL SHOW YOU FEAR IN A HANDFUL OF DUST and that's all the image of dust means in the poem - one thing: f-e-a-r. In your poem dust has multiple meanings and you aptly stretch the length of your poem to embrace as many of them as you can fit in 49 lines. In the 2nd line you do something I consider really creative: YOU don't pick up the dust, you ask someone to hand it to you. By that gesture you are treating the dust as a gift, as something entrusted to you, something not commonplace but precious, A-N-D for the duration of the poem the dust is in your hand, yes, it's making your hand rough and dirty, but you don't care! because the dust is something elemental, and you are going to show people it is the very symbol of life and value. So I consider these opening lines of highest importance in your poem because the drama of the handful of dust is our human drama at its most basic. If someone (why not you!) reads this poem outloud, he or she should mime holding the dust, or actually pick up some from the ground, this is sacred stuff! Your poem affirms that. But listeners/readers should be aware this very physical reality is your symbol for the spiritual. Your language throughout is highly animated, and you are continually engaging people. This poem is fine to read silently (All poems can be read silently.) but it should really be dramatized by a charismatic voice and presence. This poem wants to change people's thinking, to change their lives. to make them witness the truth with wonder.

A lovely writing full of patriotism and love for the world. Now and then even a handful of dust is rep rare to have. But you sort of reassure me that we are all entitled to a handful of dust. I like the strength with which you held your interest to the end. Well done. Mohabeer Beeharry

The soil you seek is in every human interaction, every piece of nature and inside of you. A nice series of questions and observations, Akash

Nicely articulated. The poem seeks to explore the correlation of man with this infinite universe that surrounds us and the philosophy that binds us together. Thanks, Dear Poet. The depth and the exceptional beauty of the poem thrills the reader. To feel the cadence of the universe To feel the existence of life.... From birth to grave Have you felt your essence.... In the speck of dust of this soil?

Very beautifully penned, Sankar. A very existential one which goes down deep to the meaning of what it is to be human. Any human being is not even able to make dust or soil you are asking. Your question therefore goes back to the Source of Life which gives meaning to human life.
