Hamlets On The River Poem by Gill Moore

Hamlets On The River

Hamlets dotted just like pearls
strung out along the river
cool breezes in the apple orchard
make the blossom quiver
but now and then the sun peeps out
to give you just a glimmer
of what the future summer holds
for hamlets on the river

Humming bees and rich cream teas
with strawberries big as apples
a country walk a village fete
a whist drive and a raffle
and when autumn tints the leaves with gold
there'll be a ploughing match
a harvest and a festival
if you've got time to catch
your breath before the winter chill sets in
and makes you shiver
oh what a future winter holds
for hamlets on the river

Fireworks to light the sky
and brighten up the gloom
line dancing in the village hall
then christmas comes and soon
the houses are bedecked with lights
and tinsel and balloons
and presents to be played with
are in all the childrens rooms
then when the winter snow sets in
and villagers are safe within
oh what a future spring will bring
for hamlets on the river
