Hairy Jack Poem by Jan Sand

Hairy Jack

I have a little teddy bear.
His name is Hairy Jack.
His eyes are round and bulgy
And slap shut with a clack
When I tip him forward
And then I tip him back.
I take him by the foot
And swing him ‘round my head.
His eyes come out on long thin strings
And he looks nicely dead.
There is a little button
In the middle of his belly
Where I can scrunch my finger in
When I watch the telly.
I wiggle it left and right
And push real hard right in
To feel where his legs are joined
With a curly twisty pin.
When I pull my finger out
There always comes some dust.
It dribbles out. It’s made of wood.
I guess that’s why he must
Be getting kind of skinny
‘Cause all his insides coming out
Have left holes in his parts,
But the worst is in his snout.
It hangs down like a bag most times
Which makes him look so sad.
One ear he has is hanging loose.
The other don’t look bad.
When I throw him on he floor
One eye don’t close alright.
It looks at me when I’m in bed
And stares right through the night.
Why does he look at me that way?
I wish he’d shut it tight.
