The following haiku is a tribute to Café Arabia, the first coffee house in the UAE to host book clubs and literary discussions; a literary salon of sorts.
Stop - think and reflect
Here in Café Arabia-
Ishtar in spring
Huda Sha’rawi
And recall May Ziyaddah-
Shemu of the Nile
Katy Antonius
Le Salonnières of the east-
Pomegranate season
Fire of Prometheus
Eternal cup of Rumi-
Grapes of summer
Rays of Babylon
Hathor, Aphrodite, Oshun -
Nightingale to Africa
Odes of Imur al-Qais
Candles of Darwish, Fadwa-
Olive season in Nablus
Muses of the East
Umm Kulthum and Fayrouz -
Shaqaeq Nu’man
The whirling dervish
The rock, the wall, the heavens-
Figs in Galilee.
