H A I R Poem by Jim Boone

H A I R

1960 - 1970 - 1980

Moons, houses, planets
Alignment: A dawning
Business class and the
Yippee-hippie sexual revolution
With hair: Lots of mo-fro
Long, glowing, flowing hair

“Buddy can you spare a dime? ”
“Why? ” “Cause you got two
And I don’t have one.”

But you’ve got LIFE and I’m listening
We’re fighting for freedom ‘of ’
Not the political ‘Nam’ kind. Jesus!
In the meantime, we’ve got our Sexy,
Arousin’ ways and my tambourine.

Okay, that’s you, but what about me?
High on life and tricks and Houston
Let’s sing, dance and get necked
Puff some grass and drink a Miller’s

Brothers: Hetros for the fun of it
Cause they don’t plan on having
Any after wives and kids and such;
Homos carrying a tambourine from
Discovery to discovery to the
Near / far away living end.

Black boys are so rooted in the
Revolution and white boys are
‘Hup-two-threeing’ it in the Army or
In Canada because they’re conscientious
Brown boys are doin’ what’s right
For family and country and God’s
In the mix, twixt now and then.

How can people be so quick to say ‘No! ’
‘Go! ’ ‘Woah! ’ How? Lord, deliver me
From this comfortable/uncomfortable
Bondage into comfortable freedom
With help-others ability when ‘un’ is
All they have. Thy will be done, so
I may be walking many miles in
Uncomfortable shoes, that I may
Know what I think I already know

Why is that gun, that face in my face?

I will not be afraid of who you believe
Yourself to be; only afraid that we
Will miss the opportunities to be
The designated drivers for each other
Before, during and after party time.

How can people be so blind to
Morning star-shine and
Heart-songs that we all know?

There’s war, music, pot, LSD and
Generations comin’ on into history.

Let the sun shine in my consciousness
And in my H A I R...
