Grocery Shopping 101, Hangzhou Poem by Raymond Farrell

Grocery Shopping 101, Hangzhou

Here in Hangzhou
I live
In the foreign student's dorm
I don't actually do
Any cooking of my own
I am allowed a kettle in my room
But a frying pan or electric heater
Is forbidden
Due to the fire hazard
So when I go
To the nearby super market
I am not drawn
To the section of the store
Where meat is sold
But today
As I strolled
One aisle over
From the meat section
I was taken aback
By the loud croak
Of a bull frog
I know that some Chinese
Eat creatures I have never tasted
And upon hearing
The croak
I decided to satisfy my curiosity
And went to see
What other creatures
Might be on sale
It turns out
That not only
Was there an acquarium full of frogs
But numerous tanks of live fish
Eels, turtles, crabs, crayfishes and snails
Were all waiting
To be purchsed
Taken home
And put in the pot.
