Green Botany Poem by David Pass

Green Botany

How green grow the rushes oh!
Red and blue light don't reflect,
They power the plant to grow.
Green does not, it they reject.

Leaves and grass are also green.
Sugars made from CO2
Food for animals to glean,
Bugs must bite and cows must chew.

All this thanks to chlorophyll,
Nature's special catalyst.
Oxygen released which will
Allow animals to exist.

How special are plants and trees,
Brainless but they have a plan.
Lasting through a winter freeze,
Grow with warm rain when they can.

Roots keep fragile soils in place,
When they're lost the soil may go.
Some bare soil will start a race
To grow faster than your foe.

Berries too are green at first
But become a darker hue.
Red or black as flavours burst.
Seed dispersal right on cue.

Bees and insects pollinate.
Birds may rid a tree of pests.
Animals and us may wait,
Come the harvest we are guests.

We should show them some respect.
Put an end to slash and burn.
Foreign plants may ours infect.
Don't play God with tree and fern.
