Goodby: Narcissus Poem by Almedia Knight-Oliver

Goodby: Narcissus

Rating: 5.0

Good-bye, I'm leaving you where you belong…
Only your reflection you see while
wandering through the forest in fear alone,
Can't see me soaking in my own spume
Now I leave you alone in your own

I'm saying goodbye to your flattering face:
Self -aggrandizement, warped self-worth, and
Other unknown things that's your base
In tears and a sadden heart
I'm leaving you in your own place
Good-bye to the love we've shared
I know it's my life alone I must face

I'm left by the riverbank nearby
the cabin in the woods by the stream
and drinking clear water in your face.
I hear the early birds awakening the day
I rest in this scared place in the cool air

Then…and only then, I feel safe in my abode
Lessening the tugging of "Look at me"
I see you can't see beyond you…for once
Strive to see me stretched beneath the sky
Looking at the stars blinking hi
My question is: why, why, why
Nature without deceit or conceit gives cause
For me to sigh!

Then you are in a state of biding goodbye, poet! But why like a Narcissus! So wide is your earth and universe, you just bloom like a lotus as KABIR once bloomed at last bed. Why Narcissus, poet! The angel or vampire, whoever your beloved may be, leave him alone to his last journey, but, when You is the subject then Good-bye laughingly indifferent in blaming or blessing anyone. So painful your goodbying, I talk so much just to make myself strict for not crying. Actually poetry is not a mere creation to me, I feel it a life saturated within. Beautifully painted a canvass captioning Good-bye. Regards, 10+++++ pranab

This is a very thoughtful write, Almedia, vividly relates the aird distance beteen two souls on different wave lengths of human love and self-giving. Then I got to the end and read these lines: Nature without deceit or conceit gives cause For me to sigh! Do you really sigh at nature WITHOUT deceit, without conceit? I thought it would give you cause to sing and dance without end, the real thing you're looking for, not narcissus self-love. Please tell me more, Almedia, put me right if you may.

Hi Almedia - a beautiful poem from a beautiful poetess. Verses One & Two. When we are young - and insecure - we need Narcissus to gaze back at us form the mirror to assure us that we are a beautiful young lady or a handsome young man. As time goes on we see 'Experience' smiling back at us and then (God forbid) our Mother or Father. We remember God does not look on the outward appearance - he looks on the heart. In Verse Three - external admiration is replaced by inner contemplation. The reflection of our soul enables us 'To rest in this sacred place in the coll breeze'. We do 'sigh' Almedia but it is (in essence) a sigh of contentment for a life well lived 'Nature without conceipt or deceipt'. Thanks for sharing - Love thru poetry - JOHN X

Narcissus [Greek mythology - a beautiful young man who fell in love with his own reflection] …from here the word Narcissism? If so who loves himself [oneself] how he can love others…rightly said Goodbye … love is self oblivion…self emptying… In such condition one ‘Then…and only then, I feel safe in my abode’…it is not Narcissism…become sublime within own self where Bliss flowethes… Nice metaphors used and blended in backdropp of Nature ‘riverbank alone’… ‘field of green trees’… ‘listen to early birds’… ‘cool breeze’…&c Thanks Ma’am for such a nice diction 10//10 Ms. Nivedita UK

You have more than one level of reflection expressed. Narcissus staring at a reflection and the voice of the poet reflecting on the meanings of the self-absorbed one. Insecurity, insensitivity to others, one's own solitude and the lack of narcissism in nature. Deep as the still waters of reflection, reflections of the heart.
