Gods And Good Real Estate Poem by Adam Holmes

Gods And Good Real Estate

If men want war
Gods want war
If gods want death
Men want death
If men trust gods
Gods exploit trust
If gods motivate men
Men motivate gods

And we are left ailing from a blinding idiocy
Denial washed with hope and hope screaming to the hopeless
Our minds, well-dressed and underfed
Needing reward for our decent deeds and forgiveness from our wickedness
Like dogs,
We pawn ourselves to please another
To please a master
To please our gods

A great gig god must be,
Always present
Always knowing
Always in the market for the next weak minded fool
Who happens to walk into his local church, temple, or mosque
To sell his soul for a corner lot in heaven,
The best piece of real estate that never existed
It almost seems too easy,
No credit checks
No open houses
No overheads
No refunds

If men want eternity
Gods will sell it
If gods demand obedience
Men will supply it
If men spite gods
Gods will spite men
If gods can kill men
Men can kill gods

If men would think themselves free
The gods couldn’t stop them

It's all very true, rings with intensity. The structure sets up that it has you agreeing that we have created our god(s) to rule ourselves. It seems that you've set up the argument that the choice to believe in god(s) is a free choice. Considering this, I'd say religion, with dogmas and rules, is not so much a trap or scam but more of humanity's way of organizing ourselves based on our beliefs. Can we be free of our self-created beliefs, free of ourselves?
