Go To Sleep Poem by Peter Mamara

Go To Sleep

by M. Eminescu (1850-1889)

Why are you afraid? Aren't you with me?
Let the rain, patter in the windows.
Let the sad wind sigh through the grass.
Be calm, you are with me lass.

Why did you get up and now you look at the floor?
You look surprised and it seems that you hold your fire.
You cannot see through the floor with your eye.
Do you want to remember something?

Get comfortable on pillows. I won't bother you.
You sleep and let me keep an eye on you.
I always like to look at you from time to time
While I read.

So I see how you sleep… and admire you with adoration…
You breathe with your mouth slightly opened.
Then, I take off my hand from my pen.
Peace enters into my sad thoughts.

You are pretty… such a pretty young woman…
Your white face is like marble.
I feel that I should run to you,
And I should cuddle you while you sleep.

But you might wake up… it would be a pity! I'm not that mean.
Sleep calmly, with an arm under your head.
I indulge my eye on you, now and then.
And sometimes I drop the book off my hand.

And I am content… The lengthy time pulsates.
The clock strikes with an even stroke.
Why are you afraid? Don't be afraid with me.
If you don't sleep, I make you to.
