Gesture (For Richard Long - Land Artist) Poem by Jay Alexander

Gesture (For Richard Long - Land Artist)

Stone rolling, man walking into mist,
The river falls,
Say goodbye, there's a white line,
Walk by walls……

Colour the way, grip minor events,
Wind in the wind,
Covered face, hood, the hill grows;
Beneath the boot, grind……

Earth, and float and mud music;
To build, to build,
This is the plan, stone on stone,
Was seen, was willed….

Where vultures sink low, circle
Epicentre,
Dry bones gather sinless, washed
By time; then enter

Into the now, drip moody, sky;
Willows bend;
And what may these stones say,
As they send,

The moon bouncing, along a low road;
Mental sleep-stack,
Double-up, raw excursions;
One day, idyllic;

To perceive is to be, so let the eyes
Match shapes,
Round, flat, triangular, thin, slender;
Let the mind gape.
