From Wonthaggi To Korumburra Poem by Francis Duggan

From Wonthaggi To Korumburra

From Wonthaggi via Kongwak the roads wind up and down
Along the undulating hills to Korumburra Town
the roads are steep and narrow through the scenic countryside
And to drive fast in such places is an invitation to suicide.

When cool Autumnal winds blew up from the sea and brown leaves were on the oak
On the road to Korumburra I met a gray haired bloke
Perhaps in his mid sixties and familiar to the place
Bronzed from Seasons of sun and wind a smile on his wrinkled face.

He gazed across the countryside saying what grand scenery
I've always loved those sun bronzed hills above the flat lands by the sea,
I've lived here for more than sixty years those old hills as old as time
Have been sketched by great artists and inspired the bards to rhyme.

He went to school in Korumburra as a shy country boy
And in South Gippsland he was born and raised and in South Gippsland he will die
A man who loves his native hills and at home he chose to stay
The lust for wander passed him by and lured others away.

On the road from Wonthaggi to Korumburra in some parts rather high
And the rise from Kongwak to Jumbunna like driving up the sky
I met one in his sixties a nice sort of a guy
One of the few for to still live here who had lived here as a boy.
