From Womb To Tomb

Rating: 4.8

How happy you were Mom
when I entered your womb,
You took so much care of me
caressed me when I kicked your tummy,
You waited for 9 months with bated breath
the day finally arrived and we met,
To my dismay on seeing me none of you were happy
as you found I was a 'girl' whilst changing my nappy,
All the emotions got buried in a fraction of a second
and you all decided to put my life to an end,
You did not even blink while doing this Mom
was it my fault that I was being born?
I lived with you happily for 9 months in your womb
Oh my Mom! why did you now leave me in a tomb!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Female infanticide is so commonly heard in India and I get deeply hurt and moved when I read such horrible incidents happening even in todays world.

Stop this Menace, your mother too was someone's daughter

Accept that -
A daughter is a gift of love -
A daughter may outgrow your lap, but she will never outgrow your heart -

It is very unfortunate that female infanticide is now too prevalent in our society. You have very beautifully contrasted the co-relationship that existed between the mother and the child before the childbirth and their relationship after the childbirth. But what I feel is that it is the patriarchal outlook of our society steered by the father that is responsible for this sorry state of affairs. Each of us should recognize that it is the male X, Y, chromosome that is responsible for the gender of a child.

so true Sir....wish the mother was literate enough to understand and vouch for this state...fathers r the culprits, not the mom.....
