Friendship Poem by Hal Caufield

Friendship

Please, please no more tears,
I begged, I pleaded.
As if words could
Heal wounds I have
So carelessly caused with them.
As if cries of sorry could
Make up for confusing pain.

I setout to make her happy,
Best intentions in my heart,
Instead, I have tormented her
With words of love
She does not wish to hear.
And in so doing I may
Have not only lost my way,
But a dear, dear friend.
So the word love I shall refrain,
And try to gain whatever
Trust remains of friendship
In her battered heart.
